Family SUVs cover a lot of different driving in a single week: school pickups, highway trips, the occasional gravel driveway at the in-laws. The tyre that suits that mix best is not usually the most aggressive-looking option on the shelf, but one built around comfort, quiet running, and predictable grip in the wet.

Wet weather performance deserves the most attention, simply because it is the condition where tyre quality matters most for safety. Look for a tyre with good reviews or ratings specifically for wet braking and wet handling, since dry-weather grip is comparatively easy for most modern tyres to deliver. A tyre that stops a meaningfully shorter distance in the wet is one of the more genuinely useful safety upgrades you can make to a family vehicle.

Ride comfort and noise are the next consideration, and they matter more on an SUV than a smaller car simply because of the extra weight and higher centre of gravity. A touring or highway-terrain tyre designed for comfort will usually flex and absorb road imperfections better than a tyre built primarily for sportier handling, which tends to run a stiffer sidewall.

Finally, tread life is worth checking against your annual kilometres, especially if the SUV is doing regular highway commuting. A tyre with a genuinely long-wearing compound costs more upfront but can work out cheaper per kilometre over the life of the tyre. If you are not sure which of the options in your size strikes the right balance, tell us roughly how the car is used (mostly city, mostly highway, occasional gravel) and we can point you toward tyres that suit that pattern rather than just the cheapest option in stock.
